On the International Women’s Day 2018 celebration, the Union Government launched a biodegradable sanitary pads ‘Suvidha’. These pads are 100% biodegradable.
‘Suvidha’ sanitary napkins priced at only Rs 2.50 per pad and it will be available at Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Centers. Each pack of pad will contain 4 pads and will cost only Rs 10.
This biodegradable pad will ensure ‘Swachhta, Swasthya and Suvidha’ for the underprivileged women.
Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Parliamentary Affairs Ananth Kumar said, “this affordable sanitary pad will promote hygiene, ease of disposal as well as keep the environment clean”.
Suvidha sanitary pads will be available at all Janaushadhi Centers by 28 May 2018, which marks World Menstrual Hygiene Day.
According to National Family Health Survery-4, 62% young women in India in the age group of 15 to 25 years still use cotton cloth for menstrual days. 42 % young women in the country used sanitary pads while 16% used locally prepared pads.
Generally, rural area women are not using a hygienic method for menstrual protection. According to Menstrual Health Alliance India, an NGO, sanitary napkins constitutes over 45% of menstrual waste, which is disposed off as routine waste along with other household garbage. This poses a major health hazard.
In urban areas of India, 13% of menstrual pads are thrown in open spaces while 10% is disposed in toilets, 9% burnt and 8% is buried.
