Uttarayan is one of the most celebrated festivals in Gujarat. Due to its astrological importance, this festival is also known as Makar Sankranti.

In Tamil Nadu Makar Sankranti or Sankranthi is known as Pongal. In Gujarat and Rajasthan Makar Sankranti is known as Uttarayana. In Haryana and Punjab Makar Sankranti is known as Maghi.
Uttarayan which is also known as Makar Sankranti or Kite Festival is celebrated with lots of excitement in India, especially in India. Makar Sankranti related to Hindu astrology. Apart from Gujarat, Uttarayan festival is celebrated in other states of India with different names but on the same date.
Every year, Uttarayan festival celebration takes place on 14th January. In 2018, Uttarayan festival comes on Sunday.
Now, Gujarati people are celebrating Kite festival for 2 days. On the 14th January, people celebrates Kite Flying and on next day they celebrate Vasi Uttarayan.
On the day of Uttarayan, the sky is full of colorful kites of various sizes and colors across the Gujarat. While Surati Undhiyu is the most popular food on the Makar Sankranti festival. People also eats ‘Chikki’ which is made from Sesame seeds, peanuts, jiggery and other substances.
Makar Sankranti means the transit of Sun in Capricorn. This transit is considered quite auspicious; hence, it is celebrated in all over India with various names like Bhogali Bihu in Assam, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, etc.
Makar Sankranti Special Food:
On the day of Uttarayan the peoples of Gujarat eat special Gujarati food like Undhiyu, Khichdo etc. The Undhiyu is the first choice of the Gujarati people to eat on the day of Makar Sankranti. Other than this food like Chiki, Til Ladoo, Sugarcane, Khajoor (Dates) and many more.
Uttaryan festival Celebration in Gujarat:
Uttarayan is dedicated to Lord Surya. In Gujarat the festival of uttarayan is most popular for kite flying. Here peoples are crazy for the celebration of Uttarayan. All peoples fly kites from early morning to late night. In olden days this festival was celebrated in the traditional way, but now-a-days this festival of kite flying is celebrated with DJ Music, arranging music on the terrace etc.
What to do on Makar Sankranti? :
The time of Makar Sankranti is considered good for auspicious work. This duration of forty Ghatis is known as Punya Kaal. Sankranti activities like taking bath, offering Naivedhya to Lord Surya, offering charity of Dakshina, performing Shraddha rituals and breaking fast or Parana should be done during Punya Kaal.
