Today, PM Modi inaugurated World Food India 2017 event in New Delhi. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), Government of India is organizing an International event “World Food India 2017”.
At the World Food India 2017 event, Government is going to promote ‘Khichdi’ as the Brand India Food. Also, on November 4,2017 Chef Sanjeev Kapoor will supervise and guide to prepare 800 kg of Khichdi in a 1000-litre pan.
Germany, Japan and Denmark are partner countries to World Food India, while Italy and the Netherlands are the focus countries.
Basically, Khichdi is a dish from South India. Made using rice and lentils, it is the most common food for everyone-rich and poor. Government choose to promote Khichdi as Brand India Food because it symbolizes India’s unity in diversity.
Khichdi is a dominant prat of Indian kitchen as it is the comfort food. It also most trusted food when you are sick.
On this occasion, World Food India 2017 brand ambassador chef Sanjeev Kapoor said, “Khichdi is consumed across the country. Everybody has their own version of it. Moreover, it is eaten in health and in sickness. It is made when someone is born as well as when someone dies.”
Basically, Khichdi is made from Rice and lentils. But different states of India have different types of Khichdi. It also includes various grains, indian spices and vegetable as well.
Types of Khichdi in India-
Khichdi in Gujarat:
Basic Khichdi is made of rice, lentils, salt. in Gujarati Khichdi, it contains spices to make it tasty. Gujarati Khichdi adds turmeric and sometimes hing. It is served with ‘Kadhi’. To add more taste, it is served with spicy dishes like Surati Undhia, Ringan na ravaiya and others.
Khichdi in Rajasthan:
Rajasthani Khichdi is prepared with millets and whole wheat instead of rice. It is slightly spicier than Gujarati Khichdi.
Khichdi in Uttarakhand:
Uttarkhand state has so many religious places where thousands of pilgrims visit throughout the year. At Badrinath shrine, Khichdi is served as Prasad. It is cooked in a hot water spring. It is a simple khichdi.
Khichdi in Maharshtra:
Maharashtrian Khichdi is made with tapioca pearls. This khichdi is spicier.
Khichdi in Tamil Nadu:
Pongal dish in Tamil Nadu is a version of simple khichdi. Khichdi in Tamil Nadu is sweet and spicy. Chakkara pongal, the sweeter version of ponga, is often served in temples of Tamil Nadu as prasadam. Melagu pongal is the spicy version made with pepper, rice and moong dal.
Khichdi in Andhra Pradesh:
Keema Khichdi is a popular form of khichdi in Andhra Pradesh. It is made with ground beef, sour sauce.
Khichdi in Karnataka:
This khichdi is prepared with vegetables. People in Karnataka make it for breakfast.
Khichdi in West Bengal:
West Bengal too adds a dash of sweetness to their version of khichdi called the bhog’er khichuri.
