Microsoft Chief Bill Gates tweeted about Indian PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday night. He tweeted such a thing that we would rather not even think about. Bill Gates praised PM Modi for his drive against open-defection in India.
Bill Gates wrote that Narendra Modi made a very frank comment that would have come from an elected official and hailed the comment as it is now making big impact in today’s times.
He also mentioned that PM Modi’s first address to the nation, PM Modi said,
“We are living in the 21st century. Has it ever pained us that our mothers and sisters have to defecate in the open?… The poor womenfolk of the village wait for the night; until darkness descends, they can`t go out to defecate. What bodily torture they must be feeling, how many diseases that act might engender. Can`t we make arrangements for toilets for the dignity of our mothers and sisters?”
Microsoft chief posted that he cannot remember another time when a national leader addressed such kind of bold topic.
He also lauded PM Modi for successfully installing 75 million toilets across India which is a huge number in all imagination.
Bill Gates also gave reason for praises that the Modi’s drive was need to the hour as India is having highest percentage of people dying because of sanitation and girls also drop out of schools because of lack of decent toilets.
Gates added, “So far, the progress is impressive. In 2014, when Clean India began, just 42 percent of Indians had access to proper sanitation. Today 63 percent do. And the government has a detailed plan to finish the job by October 2, 2019, the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth. Officials know which states are on track and which are lagging behind, thanks to a robust reporting system that includes photographing and geotagging each newly installed toilet.”
Mr. Gates also urged other countries to notice the development that is taking place in India.
