An Engineerin Marvel, Narmada Dam’s inauguration ceremony will be held soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate India’s highest and world’s second largest dam on 17 September, which is also his birthday.

56 years ago then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for Sardar Sarovar Dam on Narmada river. Narmada dam is situated in Kevadia village. The Narmada Control Authority had ordered to close the gates of Sardar Sarovar Project on 16 June 2017.

Currently Dam’s height is 138 meters with storage capacity raised to 4.73 million cubic metres. Earlier the Narmada dam height was 121.92 metres with storage capacity of 1.27 million cubic metres.

With the inauguration of Narmada dam, over 18 lakh hectares land in Gujarat would get irrigation. Narmada water will flow to more than 9000 villages of Gujarat through canal.

Facts about Narmada Dam:

Former PM Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone for Sardar Ssrovar dam on 5 April 1961.

After facing so many problems, Narmada dam is completing after 70 years after foundation.

‘Iron Man’ Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had thought about this project before our independence which came to existence after 15 years of independence.

Government started dam construction in 1989. It faced ‘narmada bachao andolan’ by Megha Patkar and many other legal problems.

But in 2006, then Gujarat CM and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi allotted budget to complete the Narmada dam construction with the height of 121.92 metres. To restart the construction of Narmada dam, Narendra Modi was on fast for 51 hours in Gandhinagar in 2006.

On June 2014, Narmada Control Authority gave the final clearance to raise the height from 121.92 m (400.0 ft) metres to 138.68 m (455 ft)

The Narmada Control Authority decided on June 17 2017 to raise the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam to its fullest height by ordering the closure of 30 Gates.

68.20 Lakh cubic metres Concrete is used for the construction of Narmada dam. If we use this amount of concrete to construct a road, then we can make it from the earth to moon.

The dam will irrigate 2,46,000 hectares of land in the strategically important desert districts of Barmer and Jalore in Rajasthan, and 37,500 hectares in the tribal hilly tract of Maharashtra. A special allocation of 0.86 million cubic feet (MAF) of water has been made to provide drinking water to 131 urban centres and 9,633 villages, which is 53 per cent of the total 18,144 villages of Gujarat.

Government will generate 1450 MW electricity which will be used in Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Gujarat state’s 9633 villages and 133 cities will get drinking water.

There are 30 gates on Narmada Dam. Each gate of the dam weighs over 450 tonnes and it takes one hour to close them.

When the water storage in dam reaches its peak level, this water can be used for drinking and farming for 6 years for the whole Gujarat state.

Narmada Dam Project Cost:

1986-87 expenses- Rs 650 crore

Till 2014 Expenses- Rs 6400 Crore

2016 Expenses (Only for dam building)- Rs 2200 Crore

Complete Narmada Yojana total expenses- Rs 47000 Crore

Estimated cost till yojana completion- Rs 65000 Crore (approx.)

On Sunday, 17 September 2017 PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate the historical Narmada dam where he and other Saints will perform rituals also. There will be chanting of ‘Narmada Ashtakam’ and then authorities open the gates of the dam.
