It is believed that Goddess Parvati created little Ganesh using the dirt off her body while having a bath and asked him to guard the door while she was bathing. Lord Shiva had gone out and then he returns at the time when Ganeshji was guarding the door.
Unknowingly, little Ganesh stopped him from entering. Furious Lord Shiva severed the head of the little child after a heated argument. When goddess Parvati saw this, she explained everything to Lord Shiva and asked him to give his son a new life.
As followers could not find head, they brought a head of an elephant. Lrd Shiva fixed the elephant’s head on the child and brought him back to life. Then he came to be known as Gajanan.
