Today Ram Nath Kovind took oath as India’s 14th President in Parliament’s Central Hall. In his first address to the Nation, he said India’s unity in diversity was the key to its success.
President Ram Nath Kovind said, “We are a country of great diversity, yet have shown that unity is the way forward. We are a peaceful nation and are now at a stage where we have to take the country forward… We are proud of our heritage and culture… it is now time we show the world what India is capable of,”.
Also President Kovind recalled his days as Member of Parliament. He said, “Often we agreed, sometimes we disagreed. But we learnt to respect each other and that is the beauty of democracy.”
71-year-old former Lawyer Ram Nath Kovind became the Governor of Bihar in 2015. After KR Narayanan he is the second Dalit President. He is the first President to have been a member of BJP.
Chief Justice of India JS Khehar administered the oath ceremony of President Kovind. At the Presidential Swearing-in ceremony, PM Narendra Modi, Vice-president Hamid Ansari, Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Union Ministers, Governors, Chief Ministers, Ambassadors, MPs, Senior civil and military officers and other diplomats were present.
Before heading to Rashtrapati Bhavan, Ram Nath Kovind and former President Pranab Mukherjee visited Rajghat to pay his respect to Mahatma Gandhi. Last week Kovind won the 2017 Presidential election against Meira Kumar, former Lok Sabha speaker.
Ram Nath Kovind got 65.65 per cent of the total votes and today he took oath as the 14th President of India.
At 10, Rajaji Marg, Rashtrapati Bhavan is newly painted with sloping red-tiled roof and chimneys, wide lawns and gardens. After the oath taking ceremony former President Dr. Mukherjee took the new President on a tour of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
A Brief history about 14th President of India Ram Nath Kovind:
Ram Nath Kovind is a son of a farmer. He is known for his humble origins and simple lifestyle.
He is born on 1 October 1945 in Kanpur Dehat. Graduated in Commerce, Kovind pursued law from Kanpur University.
Mr. Kovind practiced in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court for more than 15 years.
Ram Nath Kovind wife is Savita Kovind and they have a son and a daughter.
Mr. Kovind is the former President of BJP Dalit Morcha.
He was a two-time Rajya Sabha member from UP between 1994-2000 and 2000-2006.
He had worked as a top aide to former PM Morarji Desai. Also represented India at the UN in New York.
He has also been a member of several Parliamentary Committees, including the committee on Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Tribes, Social Justice and Empowerment, and Law and Justice.
He will be the second Dalit President after KR Narayanan to serve as the first citizen of India.
