Today the Election Commission announced the vice-president election dates. If required, elections for Vice-president of India will be held on 5 August 2017. Vote counting will also take place on the same day.
This year, Indian vice-president Hamid Ansari’s term is ending. So with President election, EC is also ready for vice-president selection.
Chief election commissioner Nasim Zaidi said, “The election commission is mandated to ensure that the elections to the office of the vice-president must be free and fair. The commission is taking all necessary steps to ensure that the elections are free and fair and will discharge its responsibilities,”
EC will issue the formal notification on 4 July 2017. The last of nomination is 18 July and last date for withdrawal of nomination is 21 July. If required, polling will take place on 5 August between 10 am and 5 pm.
Total electoral college is 790. It includes members of both the houses of parliament. Electoral college members elect the vice-president by means of a single transferable vote.
There are 233 members along with 12 nominated members in the Rajya Sabha and 543 members along with two nominated members in the Lok Sabha who are eligible to vote.
A vice-president candidate has to be supported by 20 electors as proposers and 20 as seconders. The candidate need to make a security deposit of Rs 15000.
The commission will also supply specific pens to the electors on the day of polling.
