Today Union Ministry of Urban Development released the rankings of the ‘Swacch Survekshan 2017’ survey. So Minister Venkaiah Naidu announced the list of top 25 cleanest cities in India. Madhya Pradesh’s Indore topped the list.
While MP’s Bhopal ranked 2nd for the cleanliness and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh ranked at number 3.
This survey was conducted in 434 cities as part of Union Government’s Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan. In 2016, Maysore in Karnataka topped the list and this year it dropped to 5th rank.
Swacch Survekshan is aimed at capturing the improvement in sanitation and to make cities and towns open defection-free.
Indore in MP is the Cleanest City in India 2017.
In top 50 clean cities in India, total of 31 cities accounted for Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. There are 12 clean cities in Gujarat, 11 in MP and 8 in AP. While Maharashtra has only 3 cities in the list.
Chandigarh, Chattisgarh, Delhi, HP, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Sikkim, and UP are having only one city each in 50 clean cities of India.
For top 50 dirtiest cities, Rajasthan and Punjab have 5 towns and Maharashtra accounts for 2.
Out of the 62 cities and towns surveyed in UP in 2017, 41 of them figure among the bottom 100 cities/towns.
Criteria used for the survey were:
Solid waste management (Door to Door collection, processing, disposal, etc.) 45% of total 2000 marks.
Citizen feedback: 30% of total marks.
Independent observation: 25% of total marks.
Indian PM Narendra Modi started the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan on 2nd October 2014. It provided the country a vision to create a Clean India by 2019, which marks 150th birthday of Mahatma Gandhi.
Objectives of Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan (Clean India mission) include:
Elimination of open defecation
Eradication of manual searching
Modern and Scientific Municipal Solid Waste Management
To effect behavioral change regarding healthy sanitation practice
Generate awareness about sanitation and its linkage with public health
Capacity Augmentation for Urban Local Bodies (ULB)
