Bollywood’s Millennium superstar Amitabh Bachchan is now Goodwill Ambassador for Hepatitis in South-east Asia. World Health Organisation appointed Big B as the brand ambassador for the disease.

As we all know about Big B’s accident on the sets of ‘Coolie’ film after which he was infused with about 200 donor’s blood and then he was infected with Hepatitis virus. After his appointment, Amitabh Bachchan said,

“As someone who has suffered or is still suffering from Hepatitis due to a blood transfusion, and as someone who was detected with the disease many years later, I have realised that how disabling it can be if it is not detected in time and is not timely cured. The message of how this can be detected and cured was unknown to me. When I did find out through various efficient people in this region connected with this campaign, I felt I must work towards not entirely eradicating it but atleast making people aware of what Hepatitis is,”

WHO Regional director for South-East Asia, Poonam Singh announced this decision. Every year, Hepatitis virus kills more than 4 lakh people in South East Asia. So with association of Big B with this campaign will strengthen WHO’s efforts in reducing the high numbers of premature deaths and illnesses from this virus.

Almost 90 million people are suffering from chronic liver disease as per WHO estimation. Amitabh Bachchan will join the public awareness programs and other activities to scale up the preventive measures and early diagnosis and treatment for Hepatitis.

As Amitabh Bachchan is a millennium Superstar, his voice and urge help to make the real changes in the world. Earlier we have seen the effect in the polio eradication.

As per WHO reports, countries are scheduling Hepatitis B vaccination as – one dose within 24 hours of birth and after 6 months, 3 doses will provide protection.

WHO is aiming to end hepatitis virus by 2030 with the support of ‘Sarkar 3’ actor Bachchan.

Bachchan had served as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Polio in India. He is supporting various health and other campaigns in India such as TB, clean India Drive and more.

Recently, Amitabh Bachchan’s film Sarkar 3 released which got average response from the audience.
