Union Government has made the service charge in hotels and restaurants completely voluntary. Union Minister for Consumer Affairs Ram Vilas Paswan announced about this in a series of tweet.
Ram Vilas Paswan said that now Service charge on hotel and restaurant bills is voluntary, not mandatory.
“Hotels/Restaurants should not decide how much service charge is to be paid by customer and it should be left to discretion of customer. Government has approved guidelines on Service Charge. Service Charge is totally voluntary and not mandatory now,”.
Even, Government is sending the guidelines to states for necessary actions at their ends. As per Government’s guidelines, now hotels and restaurant need to keep the service charge column blank so that customer can fill it up before the final payment if they want.
If any restaurant or hotel is asking to pay service charge compulsory, customers can file a complaint against them.
For this, the government will soon pass the new consumer protection bill so that the authority will have powers to take strong actions.
PMO approved this service charge issue advisory recently. After the approval from PMO, now Ram Vilas Paswan announced for the same.
Even earlier, several times, Ram vilas paswan spoke against the service charge imposed on bills. Even he had asked explanation from hotels and restaurants on this.
