Manipur’s Iron Lady Irom Chanu Sharmila will end her fast after 16 years on today, Tuesday 9th August 2016 morning. Irom Sharmila is on fast for last 16 years for repeal of the Armed Forces Act. Chanu Sharmila’s brother Irom Singhajit said that she would break her fast at a local court in Imphal, Manipur.

Irom Chanu Sharmila is now 44-year-old. Sharmila’s family was forcibly feeding her through a nasal tube since year 2000 to keep her alive.

Irom Chanu Sharmila’s brother Irom Singhajit said, “She will be produced before a judicial magistrate tomorrow and the court will release her from judicial custody after she breaks her fast as she had announced a fortnight ago.”

Forum of Sharmila Kunba Lup’s women activists and her supporters will meet Sharmila Irom for starting her new journey. But Sharmila Irom’s mother Shakhi Devi will not meet her daughter as she is waiting for the moment of her daughter’s victory.

Irom Singhajit said, “She will not go there to meet her. She is waiting for the moment of her victory which will come only when AFSPA is repealed.”

On 26 July 2016, Irom Sharmila announced her decision to end her fast and from then her family and supporters were not able to meet her. Sharmila Irom has announced to break her fast and to enter politics to ensure that AFSPA is repealed through political means.

Sharmila’s brother said, “We don’t know where she will go after her release. If she wants to come home and stay with us, we are ready to welcome her. But it is her desire.”

Her brother also said he is waiting to meet Ms Sharmila today to discuss future strategies.

Irom Chanu Sharmila’s doctor said that she might have to be given liquid diet for some days as her body might not be able to digest food at a sudden point after 16 years.

Sharmila’s Doctor Laishram Deben said, “Her condition is okay as she has been getting all nutrients. She can walk also”

Ms Sharmila’s struggle has been the nucleus of all protests against AFSPA in Manipur and the neighboring north-eastern states.
