Cloudburst incident was reported from Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on 8th May 2016, Sunday morning. Several houses were buried under debris following a cloudburst near the Barsali forests of Karnaprayag in Chamoli district. The incident occurred around 7 AM Sunday.
Police and administration officials reached the place of Incident. They began rescue operations that were on till the filing of the report. The affected families have been shifted to a safer places and rescue operation are still on. Tharali-Dewal road has been blocked.
According to the disaster management centre in the district, 10 to 15 houses were partially damaged in another landslide at a village in Karnaprayag. Cloudburst led to heavy rain in Chamoli’s Tharali Tehsil in Uttarakhand. Many cars and other vehicles were washed away in the heavy rains.
Rescue and Relief operations have been slow due to continuously rain. Reports of another cloudburst incident in Kaliyana village of the Barakot block in Champawat district were received. However, Tehri Garhwal CMO Dr Vinod Tolia said they had not received any information about it.
District Magistrate of Chamoli Vinod Kumar Suman said that, “The loosened rubble hurtling down a hillside pushed some vehicles into the Pindar river. Badarinath national highway has been blocked at Karnaprayag and Maithana due to the landslide while Pokhari-Karnaprayag road is also closed at many points and efforts are on to clear the way”
