2002-03 years’ Mumbai Multiple Blast case hearing was held today, 6th April 2016 in Mumbai Special Court. Mumbai Special Court gave lifetime imprisonment to the main accused Muzammil Ansari. Three other accused are given 10 years of jail.
Other accused including Saquib Nachan, the general secretary of the outlawed Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) are given 10 years’ jail term. Three other convicts were given two years’ jail term by Special POTA Judge P. R. Deshmukh.
Along with Muzammil, Wahid Ansari and Farhan Khot have also been awarded life imprisonment.
All the 10 were found guilty and convicted by the court on 29 March 2016, after which there were arguments between special public prosecutor Rohini Salian and defence lawyers on the quantum of sentencing, which concluded on Tuesday.
Linked by a common conspiracy, the blasts occurred near McDonald’s eatery in Mumbai Central Terminus on 6 December, 2002, another in a Vile Parle market on 27 January, 2003 and the third in crowded ladies first class compartment of a suburban train near Mulund on 13 March, 2003. That Tripple blast of 2002-03 in Mumbai had killed total of 12 people and injured 139 people.
Three bombs exploded in three different parts of the city of Mumbai in a span of a little over three months. The first blast took place on 6 December 2002 at McDonald’s restaurant on the main building premises of the Mumbai Central railway station.
The second blast occurred on January 27, 2003, in a crowded market in Vile Parle East, while the third blast took place in a crowded Karjat-bound local train at the Mulund railway station on March 13, 2003. As many as 12 persons died in these blasts and 27 were seriously injured.
The Mumbai Police had said the blasts were the handiwork of Students Islamic Movement of India activists who were led by Saquib Nachan, the former general secretary of the banned outfit.
A total of 16 persons were arrested in the case. Apart from Nachan, those arrested include Muzammil Ansari, an engineer, and Dr Anwar Ali, a PhD degree holder who taught Urdu at National Defence Academy, Pune.
