Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) rusticated three students including Anirban Bhattacharya and Umar Khalid on 26th April 2016, Monday. JNU announced on Monday about the rustication of Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhhatacharya in connection with an event organised in the campus to mark the death anniversary of Afzal Guru.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) rusticated to Umar Khalid for one semester and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on Umar Khalid while Anirban Bhhatacharya has been declared out of bounds from the campus for five years after 23 July, 2016. Anirban Bhhatacharya has been rusticated till the period of 15th July.

Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhhatacharya were arrested by Delhi police. Both were arrested by Delhi police on sedition charges and spent about 15 days in Tihar jail under judicial custody. The JNU slapped a fine of Rs. 10,000 on JNUSU (Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union) leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who is arrested on sedition charges in February when anti-India slogans were allegedly shouted at a programme on the campus.

According senior university official, “Based on the report of the high-level committee which arrived at its conclusion based on depositions, perusal of video clips (provided by JNU Security and authenticated by forensic tests), and examination of documents on record, the university has decided to rusticate three students.”

An official said that, “Kashmiri research scholar Mujeeb Gattoo has also been rusticated for two semesters after being found ‘guilty’ of ‘participating in objectionable sloganeering during the event.”

“The university has also decided to withdraw hostel facilities of two students and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on both. While former JNUSU President Ashutosh Kumar’s hostel facility has been withdrawn for a year, another student Komal Mohite — one of the organisers — has been barred from staying in the hostel till July 1.” He added.

JNUSU Vice President Shehla Rashid Shora said, “We completely reject this farcical enquiry report, as it is based on sheer vendetta and a biased enquiry. These are all innocent students, coming from extremely humble and underprivileged backgrounds.”

JNU has been penalized a total 14 students including JNUSU members Rama Naga, Chintu Kumari and Anant Prakash Narayan, and event organisers Reyazul Haque and Rubina Saifi are among the 14 people fined by the university. These JNUSU members are current and former also.
