Mehbooba Mufti is set to take over as next CM of Jammu and Kashmir. Mehbooba Mufti Sayeed is the president of the Jammu & Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party and the prospective chief minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. She is the daughter of former Home minister of India and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.
The former CM of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Mohammad Sayeed caused to death after a short term of disease on 7th January 2016. His treatment was going under All India Institute of Medical Science at Delhi. PM Narendra Modi, President Pranav Mukherjee along with political leaders were all present at the mourning of Mufti Sayeed.
He will be succeeded by Mehbooba Mufti, his eldest daughter and president of the People’s Democratic Party that he founded in 1999 – who will become the state’s first female CM. Her contributions in building the party have been tremendous.
As news of Sayeed’s demise spread, tributes poured in from across the political spectrum and thousands of people gathered at the Chinar-ringed Dara Sikho Bagh in his native Bijbehara in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, where his body was laid to rest.
Mufti Sayeed in his long political journey won many admirers across the political spectrum. He will be missed by all of us. It is almost impossible to underestimate the challenge that Mehbooba Mufti faces as she gets set to take charge of Jammu and Kashmir.
Jammu and Kashmir has been badly polarized by such issues as the beef ban and the recent flag controversy. On top of that, the state faces a terrible threat of what could even be a quantum leap in militancy.
A party delegation met the Governor at Raj Bhavan in Srinagar and handed over the letter which says that the PDP legislators back the 56-year-old Mehbooba to take over as the 13th Chief Minister of the state.
The party leader, however, did not specify the date or time for her swearing-in. Earlier, BJP, which is the coalition partner in the state government, left it to PDP to choose its nominee for the post of Chief Minister.
Ms. Mehbooba is currently member of Lok Sabha, representing Anantnag Constituency of Kashmir. It is for PDP to decide who will be their leader. Ms. Mehbooba has had her share of attackers in the saffron ranks for several reasons, including her passionate adoption of her party’s ‘self-rule’ concept, which used to be dubbed “as soft separatism” by many in the BJP.
It was one thing for her to take over from her father when he was still around and totally another when he is gone. Sayeed had crafted an unlikely alliance with BJP helping it share power for the first time in the Muslim majority state in March last year.
Also, the crucial Budget session of the state assembly begins on January 18 and a chief minister must be in place by then. In state elections held in December 2014, the PDP had won 28 of Jammu and Kashmir’s 87 seats, dominating the Kashmir Valley, but fell short of a majority.
The BJP placed number 2 in the state with 25 seats, all won in the Jammu region.
