Famous Indian classical Dancer, Choreographer and Instructor Mrinalini Sarabhai passed away at the age of 97. Noted danseuse and Padma Bhushan recipient Mrinalini Sarabhai passed away today morning i.e. Thursday, January 21, 2016 in Ahmedabad.
Legendary Bharatnatyam dancer, Mrinalini Sarabhai, has die from complications related to old age. Fondly known as ‘Amma’, Mrinalini Sarabhai was the founding director of Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, an institute for imparting training in dance, drama, music and puppetry, in the city of Ahmedabad.
She was the wife of Indian physicist Vikram Sarabhai. Mrinalini Sarabhai was admitted to a hospital in the western Indian city of Ahmadabad with an infection. She was brought to her home in Usmanpura, but passed away in the morning today at 10:10 am.
She had a long and peaceful life. Mrinalini Sarabhain had given training of Bharatnatyam and Kathakali dance to more than 18000 students. Trained in Bharatnatyam, Kathakali and Mohiniyattom, she was educated at Shantiniketan under Rabindranath Tagore. She married physicist Vikram Sarabhai, the Father of India’s space programme, in 1942.
She played a vital role in popularization of Indian arts. Mrinalini came from a family of achievers. Sarabhai was born in the southern Indian state of Kerala and was educated in Switzerland and Kolkata. The last rites of the danseuse will be held at a farmhouse owned by the family in Pethapur village in Gandhinagar.
Our prayers are with the family at this hour of grief. We condole the demise of legendary dancer Shrimati Mrinalini Sarabhai. In a befitting tribute, her last journey would begin from the Darpana Academy dance floor, the very institution she founded.
