Instagram will hold its first ever photography exhibition in India on January 7, 2016 Thursday. Where photos generated from the photo and video sharing app will be displayed. The social media app, owned by Facebook, will put on display community-generated Instagram posts around the theme ‘Celebrating Diversity of Bengal’ at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) gallery in Kolkata.
The community-centric photo exhibition will feature a combination of images covering festivals of West Bengal and images from the local Instagram community capturing the diversity of the state in the landscape, people, food, wildlife, architecture, etc.
“People today are finding their visual voice through the images we capture and share with others, each image telling a story about what we are experiencing. Images are universal. They transcend language and cultural walls,” a statement from the company said.
It said that the Instagram community in India has shown its feeling towards portraying cultural shades using the power of the mobile app. Facebook selected India and Kolkata city for their first Photography exhibition because Indians communities have increasingly become active users of its photo and video sharing app – Instagram.
The company is using various meanings, including partnerships with local telecom operators, to allow cost-free access to its website and services as part of the efforts to tap Indians coming online for the first time.
