Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2015 will be celebrated in Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar in Gujarat from 7 to 9 January 2015. 9th January was selected as the Non-resident Indian day or Pravasi Bhartiya Divas since it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, our Nation’s father, returned to India from South Africa and who led India’s freedom struggle against Britishers.
This year celebration of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2015 would be special as this year Mahatma Gandhi’s returning to India from South Africa completes 100 years. On completion of 100 years of arrival of Mahatma Gandhi, Pravasi Bharatiya Divas of year 2015 will be celebrated in Gujarat capital Gandhinagar.
Pravasi Bhartiya Divas is also known as Non-resident Indian Day (NRI Day). On this day celebration, the overseas Indians are awarded for their contribution to India for the last year. On Pravasi Bhartiya Divas celebration, NRIs are addressed by Indian President, Prime Minister and other dignitaries.
